Yearly Lawn Care Schedule

January/February

Moss Control and Hollow-tine aeration can be carried out during these months in preparation for scarifying in March/April.

Mow the lawn only if it is dry enough to do so, but always leave it on a high setting. Try to stay off the lawn if it is wet or frosty.

March/April

Scarifying and aeration can be carried out in these months. Aeration is best done before the end of April ideally.

These are also good months for getting a spring feed on the lawn to help establish good root growth. You can also seed and top-dress in these months. Seeding later into April allows time for any morning frosts to have gone.

By now the grass should have begun to grow so fortnightly mowing is usually enough.

Water at least once a week to give the grass the moisture it needs to stay healthy.  If you’ve re-seeded, keep the top centimetre of soil moist throughout the early germination period. This will involve daily watering.

May-September

As these are the fasting growing months then weekly mowing is probably needed. It’s best to leave the grass just a little longer so it retains its colour and strength. Early May it can get a bit dry so applying a wetting agent helps to avoid the grass becoming hydrophobic. This impacts the water getting into the soil and minimises the impact it should have. It’s not an essential treatment but it does help. Should red thread be around, look to apply a season specific fertiliser to help give the added nitrogen boost to help clear it.

June/July

Apply a summer weed and feed. This will tackle the different summer weeds that often come through like trefoil and buttercups etc…

You’ll possibly need to water twice a week during these months.

August-October

Applying an autumn feed during these months will help the lawn stay green but will just slow the growth ever so slightly so as not to promote disease which often comes with high nitrogen feeds this time of the year.

Mowing will possibly need to be done once or twice a week and will gradually slow down as the weather begins to cool down.

Think about watering in the early morning before the heat of the day once or twice a week if it’s still hot. Gradually reduce this to once a week as and when the weather cools or if there is quite a lot of rain about.

This is also a good time to scarify, aerate and reseed. September is usually warm enough and wet enough for germination to occur. Once again if this is done then regular watering will be needed daily.

November/December

Apply a moss control to keep the moss at bay. Remember moss control darkens the moss to stop growth but it’s only scarifying that lifts the moss out.

Mow if it’s still growing but not if it’s very wet. Mow on a high setting and avoid going on the lawn if it’s wet or frosty to avoid bruising the grass.
